Mrs. Johnson loving second grade since 1986!
May 21, 2023
Dear 2A,
Today is one of those bittersweet moments. It’s hard to believe this is my final newsletter to you all and my final Saint John Newsletter. In one week, you’ll officially become third graders. You’ve put in the work, effort and time and it is well earned. I cannot wait for you all to show your third-grade teachers the incredible students that you are. You are each intelligent, hardworking, kind, and loving individuals. How blessed I have been to be your teacher. You took on challenges and hopefully realized that the hard stuff, wasn’t impossible, it just meant you had to work a little harder. You learned how to be good friends to one another and help out those who maybe didn’t have the courage to speak up for themselves. I admire the dedication that you put towards your work. The desire to impress your teachers and parents helped you each to excel. I hope you impressed yourselves along the way. I never for one moment want you to think that you are not smart or that you can’t do something because it’s too hard. If I have taught you one thing is that I don’t want your self-doubt to get in the way of you trying something new. You have surprised me in many ways and I know you’ve surprised yourselves. I’m proud of you 2A! 🤗
Now, as I said before we work hard to play hard. We can’t just throw our hands up and say we’re done….at least not yet. 😉
Let’s look at the week ahead…
We will continue to work on our handwriting cursive letters this week. In Language Arts we’ll follow brush up on our grammar skills and paragraph writing. We will wrap up our Knowledge Unit on people who have fought for a cause with a short assessment. We continue to read from our readers through popcorn and snake reading, buddy reading and silent reading. Though, we have completed our final spelling test, we’ll still have a few rounds of Sparkle to practice our spelling.
We finished up our Telling Time Chapter this week and we have just enough time to introduce fractions. We will practice writing, drawing and identifying fractions. We may even learn some 4th grade math terms along the way. We’ll take a closer look at everyday items and foods that are already divided into fractions. Can you think of some already?
We’ve entered into one of students’ favorites Science themes, earth processes. We’ve begun to discuss how earth’s surface has changed through weathering and erosion last week and even practiced designing and engineering some earthquake proof buildings with the help of toothpicks, marshmallows and jello! This week we’ll read about and discuss how earth processes plays a part in changing earth’s surface. How do earthquakes, volcanoes and tornadoes change the surface of the earth? Give your students one week and they’ll be able to answer those questions for you.
We’ll take some time for reflection during our Religion classes and create letters of thanks to God for watching over us this school year. What do we have to be thankful for? What do we still need help from God with? It’s important for us to take time to give thanks for our many blessings and not just look to God for what we need, but also to say thank you. Our final school mass of the year will be this Wednesday at 10 am.
I have some fun events planned for this week that will all take place during the final hour of each day. Students will learn about the next day’s events when they write down their homework into their agenda. That’s right we’ll still be using our agendas this week. Workbooks will be going home throughout the week. Please make sure that your child is emptying their backpack nightly. They will definitely need the extra space throughout the week. If you know that your child will be leaving early this week, would you please email me and let me know. I want to make sure they receive their special treat from me.
Our end of the year party is scheduled for this Thursday, May 25th. 🥳 Our party will kick off with an in-classroom lunch party at noon. Students should still bring in a morning snack and water bottle that day and if they would rather, they can still bring in their own lunch. I am asking each student to please bring in a beach towel on Thursday. They’ll leave their beach towel at school, as we will be using it the next day for our breakfast. 🥞
Thank you to all that have signed up to make both the party and breakfast successful. I want to also say a special thank you to Kerri Casa and Nicole Beyer for being incredible room parents this year and making it a fun and memorable for the kids and I. From organizing Friday Favorites, class parties, making our birthdays special and sharing their appreciation with Mrs. Callahan and I daily, we cannot say thank you enough.
Our annual 2A Family Breakfast will be on our final day of 2nd grade, Friday, May 26th. There is no need for students to bring backpacks on this day. We’ll spend the day looking at and signing one another’s yearbooks and enjoying breakfast al fresco! Our final school day will conclude with Courtyard Prayer at 11:15 am. I invite you all to join us in this community event. Please make note that our dismissal will immediately follow Courtyard Prayer around 11:40 (K-2 dismissal) and there will be No Extended Day. We are all excited to begin our summer vacation and don’t want any kiddos sitting waiting to be picked up.
Both Mrs. Callahan and I want to thank you all for an incredible school year. Our village has grown stronger and tighter each day. Thank you for looking out for one another, encouraging your children to do their best, sharing words of encouragement with me and making this year a positive one. There is not a doubt in my mind that these 22 students will go onto make some great changes in the world. They are each blessed with incredible God-given gifts and with parents like you, the sky is the limit. As I travel onto Our Lady of Perpetual Help, know that I will continue to keep you and your families in my prayers. Saint John’s will always hold a special place in my heart because of the families I have met and the students that I have been blessed with teaching. Even though we may not get to see each other next year, you will always be part of my ever growing second grade family. Remember to work hard, you CAN do the hard stuff, show kindness, be a good friend and amaze those 3rd grade teachers. I will miss you 2A! ♥️
With Endless Gratitude,
🍎 Mrs. Johnson
