Work Expectations:
Homework:
Students are expected to turn in the homework when it is due. Reading logs and agendas are checked daily with parent signatures. Daily homework is to be turned in the following morning. Students who turn in work late will receive -2 point for each day it is late. Agendas are used as a checklist to make sure homework is completed for the next day. It is the students responsibility to make sure their agendas are correctly filled out, signed nightly and returned the following day along with their homework in their yellow folders.
Name, Number, and Date:
Students are expected to write their name, number, and date on all work that is completed. Students will lose -2 points if they do not have all three written on their papers. No Name papers will go into the "No Name" Basket. It is a student's responsibility to check the basket daily to claim work. They have one week to claim the assignment before it is entered as a zero into the gradebook.
Spelling:
Each Monday students will receive a list of spelling words and sentences for them to practice at home. The students will then take a spelling test on Friday. Students will be graded on their spelling words and sentences. There will be two separate grades. They will have 14 spelling words. They will be graded on correct spelling, capital letter(when needed), and correct punctuation. Students will be expected to spell ALL words correctly in the sentence and have proper sentence mechanics.
Reading Log:
Each week the students will receive a reading log. They are expected to read 10-20 minutes a night. Students should correctly and neatly write the title, author and number of pages read into their daily log. A parent or legal guardian is asked to please sign each night acknowledging that your child has read. Reading logs will be checked each morning and then collected at the end of the week. Please see below for a copy of our weekly reading log.
Math
Math homework will be given out as needed. If students need extra practice, there may be some worksheets or workbook pages sent home throughout the week that go along with what we are learning in class. I will keep you posted on IXL. There will be some weeks that students will be assigned IXL homework. When IXL is assigned, students will be asked to complete a specific skill or an allotted amount of time of skill practice.
Mad Minutes:
Our focus will fall on multiplication facts memorization. Students should continue to practice using their set of flashcards that we created in class. They should be practicing their facts daily. Each week they will take a "Mad Minute" timed test to build up on their fluency. The quiz consists of 36 multiplication problems. They will start off with 5 minutes, then 4 minutes, next it will go down to 3 minutes. They will take it a final time of three minutes. The final quiz of 3 minutes will be taken for a math grade. The quizzes I use are from math-drills.com. Feel free to take a look at the website and practice at home. Students are expected to know their multiplication facts up to 6 by the beginning of third grade. Each month will focus on the next set of facts. December: x2. January: x3. February: x4. March: x5. April: x10.
